Feb 01, 2010 So, the CP2102 is being recognized, but the driver (cu. And tty.) cannot be found (or possibly is not installed). I tied more things: 1. Performed a Mac reset of SMC and PRAM, with no joy. Reinstalled Snow Leopard. Reinstalled the Si Labs driver package, and restarted. For most of these operating systems two types of driver are available: Virtual COM Port (VCP) drivers and direct (D2XX) drivers. The VCP driver emulates a standard PC serial port such that the USB device may be communicated with as a standard RS232 device. The D2XX driver allows direct access to a USB device via a DLL interface.
I’m on Mavericks (10.9.5) and fighting with a USB device with a “FT232R” chip (from FTDI) for USB to serial conversion.
It was not accessible in OS X (e.g. QuickTerm didn’t list it, only the Bluetooth Port + Modem).
Using an old Windows (in a Parallels VM on the same Mac) I could (and still can) access the device, switch it back and forth between OS X and Win, and send commands to it using a terminal SW.
In OS X it seems to be unknown, however, the USB Device Tree reports the FT232R USB UART correctly with Product ID and Vendor ID from FTDI.
But I want to get rid of the Win (VM) solution and installed the FTDI driver for Mac, didn’t work.
As suggested by FTDI for Mavericks

I have also disabled (renamed) the AppleUSBFTDI.kext, restarted and installed the FTDI driver (version 2.3, signed by Apple). The installer always tells me “success” but I still can’t see the driver /System/Library/Extensions/FTDIUSBSerialDriver.kext (should it be there?) and the device isn’t accessible from OS X.
I’ve tried again and again, there is no FTDI or USBSerial device listed in /dev when I plug it in or switch it back from Win - I guess because the (OS X) driver isn’t correctly installed?
Could someone help, please?
(I have little knowledge in OS X)

The FT232R USB driver is a bit of a complicated install. The screenshots below will give you direction with regards to installing the driver the correct way. This means that you first have to uninstall the driver, disconnect from the internet and then install the driver again. The FT232R USB drivers below need to be extracted to an area on your computer you can find.
Step 1:
Download the driver file and extract it to your hard driver where you can find it
Step 2:

You first need to uninstall the incorrect drivers on your computer. In Windows, go to Control Panel then to Device Manager
Now press the delete button on your computer and it will ask for confirmation.
Collapse the Ports menu and now click on the USB controller at the bottom of the list.
Now you need to uninstall the existing USB Serial Convertor. Commander one mac.
Disconnect the USB cable from your PC to KMX1 or KMX2
reconnect the USB cable from your PC to KMX1 or KMX2
A new yellow flagged item will appear FT232R USB UART
Right Click onFT232R USB UART
Select Update Driver Software
Now you need to find where you extracted the drivers from the file you downloaded above and point the software to the directory.
The driver software for USB Serial Converter has been installed
The USB Serial Convertor is now installed. Next you have to install the port. If you are old enough to remember software modems then you will recall that it was done in the same manner.
The yellow flagged item will have changed name to USB Serial Port
Right Click on USB Serial Port
Select Update Driver Software
The driver software for the Port is in the same directory where you had the other drivers which you had just installed.
The Serial Port will now install and that will be the final installation. There should be no yellow flags any more.
Done!
See the updated version and UART driverhere.
